1-12 to 1-19

तस्य संजनयन् हर्षम् कुरुवृद्धः पितामहः ।
सिम्हनादम् विनद्य उच्चैः शङ्खम् दध्मौ प्रतापवान् ॥ १२ ॥

tasya saMjayan harSam kuruvRddhaH pitAmahaH |
simhanAdam vinadya uccaiH zaGkham dadhmau pratApavAn || 12 ||

पितामहः [pitAmahaH] Grandfather Bhishma, कुरुवृद्धः [kuruvRddhaH] the eldest among the Kurus, संजयन् तस्य हर्षम् [saMjayan tasya harSam] was the one to lift his spirits विनद्य सिम्हनादम् [vinadya simhanAdam] by roaring like a lion. दध्मौ शङ्खम् [dadhmau zaGkham] He blew his conch उच्चैः [uccaiH] loudly प्रतापवान् [pratApavAn] and turned on the heat.

ततः शङ्खाः च भेर्याः च पणवानक गोमुखाः ।
सहसैव अभ्यहन्यन्त स शब्दः तुमुलोऽभवत् ॥ १३ ॥

tataH zaGkhAH ca bheryAH ca paNavAnaka gomukhAH |
sahasaiva abhyahanyanta sa zabdaH tumulo'bhavat || 13 ||

ततः [tataH] Then, सहसैव [sahasaiva] that instant, शङ्खाः [zaGkhAH] conches च [ca] and भेर्याः पणवानक गोमुखाः [bheryAH paNavAnaka gomukhAH] various instruments अभ्यहन्यन्त [abhyahanyanta] were beaten. स शब्दः [sa zabdaH] That sound अभवत् [abhavat] became तुमुलः [tumulaH] a violent uproar.

ततः श्वेतैः हयैर्युक्ते महति स्यन्दने स्थितौ ।
माधवः पांडवः चैव दिव्यौ शङ्खौ प्रदध्मतुः ॥ १४ ॥

tataH zvetaiH hayairyukte mahati syandane sthitau |
mAdhavaH pAMDavaH caiva divyau zaGkhau pradadhmatuH || 14 ||

ततः [tataH] After that, माधवः [mAdhavaH] Krishna च [ca] and पांडवः [pAMDavaH] Arjuna प्रदध्मतुः [pradadhmatuH] sounded दिव्यौ शङ्खौ [divyau zaGkhau] their divine conches, स्थितौ [sthitau] standing महति स्यन्दने [mahati syandane] in their famous chariot युक्ते श्वेतैः हयैः [yukte zvetaiH hayaiH] pulled by white horses.

पान्चजन्यम् हृषीकेशो देवदत्तम् धनन्जयः ।
पौन्ड्रम् दध्मौ महा शङ्खम् भीमकर्म वृकोदरः ॥ १५ ॥

pAncajanyam hRSIkezo devadattam dhananjayaH |
paunDram dadhmau mahA zaGkham bhImakarma vRkodaraH || 15 ||

हृषीकेशः [hRSIkezaH] Krishna पान्चजन्यम् [pAncajanyam] sounded the conch called Panchajanya, धनन्जयः [dhananjayaH] Arjuna देवदत्तम् [devadattam] the conch called Devadatta वृकोदरः [vRkodaraH] and Bhima, भीमकर्म [bhImakarma] who is capable of fearsome deeds, दध्मौ [dadhmau] sounded पौन्ड्रम् [paunDram] the conch called Paundra.

अनन्तविजयम् राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
नकुलः सहदेवश्च सुग्ःओष मणिपुष्पकौ ॥ १६ ॥
काश्यः च परमेष्वासः शिखण्डी च महारथः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नो विराटः च सात्यकिः चापराजितः ॥ १७ ॥
द्रुपदो द्रौपदेयाः च सर्वतः पृथिवीपते ।
सौभद्रः च महाबाहुः शङ्खान् दध्मुः पृथक् पृथक् ॥ १८ ॥

anantavijayam rAjA kuntIputro yudhiSThiraH |
nakulaH sahadevazca sugHoSa maNipuSpakau || 16 ||
kAzyaH ca parameSvAsaH zikhaNDI ca mahArathaH |
dhRSTadyumno virATaH ca sAtyakiH cAparAjitaH || 17 ||
drupado draupadeyAH ca sarvataH pRthivIpate |
saubhadraH ca mahAbAhuH zaGkhAn dadhmuH pRthak pRthak || 18 ||

राजा [rAjA] My King, कुन्तीपुत्रो [kuntIputro] the son of Kunti, युधिष्ठिरः [yudhiSThiraH] Yudhishtira, दध्मुः अनन्तविजयम् [dadhmuH anantavijayam] sounded the Anantavijaya, along with नकुलः सहदेवश्च सुग्ःओष मणिपुष्पकौ [nakulaH sahadevazca sugHoSa maNipuSpakau] Nakula and Sahadeva blew their conches called Sughosha and Manipushpaka. च [ca] Along with them, काश्यः परमेष्वासः [kAzyaH parameSvAsaH] the King of Kasi with his great bow, शिखण्डी च महारथः [zikhaNDI ca mahArathaH] Shikhandi the great chariot-warrior, धृष्टद्युम्नः विराटः च अपराजितः सात्यकिः [dhRSTadyumnaH virATaH ca aparAjitaH sAtyakiH] Drshtadyumna, Virata, the undefeated Satyaki, द्रुपदो द्रौपदेयाः च सर्वतः पृथिवीपते [drupado draupadeyAH ca sarvataH pRthivIpate] Drupada, his sons, all the Kings च सौभद्रः महाबाहुः [ca saubhadraH mahAbAhuH] and the mighty Son of Subhadra दध्मुः पृथक् पृथक् [dadhmuH pRthak pRthak] sounded their respective शङ्खान् [zaGkhAn] conches.

स घोषो धार्तराष्ट्राणाम् हृदयानि व्यदारयत् ।
नभः च पृथिवीम् चैव तुमुलो व्यनुनादयन् ॥ १९ ॥

sa ghoSo dhArtarASTrANAm hRdayAni vyadArayat |
nabhaH ca pRthivIm caiva tumulo vyanunAdayan || 19 ||

स घोषः [sa ghoSaH] That sound व्यदारयत् [vyadArayat] tore through हृदयानि [hRdayAni] the hearts धार्तराष्ट्राणाम् [dhArtarASTrANAm] of Dhrtarashtra’s sons. व्यनुनादयन् [vyanunAdayan] It resonated तुमुलः [tumulaH] into a tumultuous crescendo, नभः च पृथिवीम् [nabhaH ca pRthivIm] filling the earth and the sky.

In our anxiety, we interpret anything that happens as a signal of doom.

Looking at Duryodhana’s anxiety, Bhishma uttered a roar and blew his conch to raise Duryodhana’s spirits. Bhishma also got others in his army to utter sounds of victory.

On the other side, Krishna - The Lord of lords, the Master of everything, who was Arjuna’s charioteer, and Arjuna himself, seated in a special chariot qualified to conquer all worlds, blew their conches- Panchajanya and Devadatta. Then Yudhishtira, Bhima and others blew their conches.

‘That sound pierced the heart of Duryodhana and the rest of your sons. The power of the Kauravas is destroyed today, they thought.’ - Sanjaya said this to Dhritarashtra, who desired the victory of the Kauravas.
