न हि प्रपश्यामि [na hi prapazyAmi] I really don’t see यत् अपनुद्यात् [yat apanudyAt] anything that can get rid of मम शोकम् [mama zokam] my sorrow, इन्द्रियाणाम् उच्छोषणम् [indriyANAm ucchoSaNam] which is draining my sense organs, अवाप्य अपि [avApya api] even after I obtain आधिपत्यम् [Adhipatyam] control over ऋद्धम् राज्यम् [Rddham rAjyam] this prosperous kingdom सुराणाम् च [surANAm ca] with its good people, असपत्नम् [asapatnam] having no enemies भूमौ [bhUmau] on this earth. सन्जय उवाच [sanjaya uvAca] Sanjaya said- गुडाकेशः [guDAkezaH] Arjuna, परन्तपः [parantapaH] the destroyer of enemies हृषीकेशम् एवम् उक्त्वा [hRSIkezam evam uktvA] having spoken this way to Krishna, बभूव [babhUva] became तूष्णीम् [tUSNIm] quiet, उक्त्वा [uktvA] having said the words न योत्स्यामि [na yotsyAmi] ‘I shall not fight’, गोविन्दम् [govindam] to Krishna.

The Lord knows that Arjuna lacks knowledge about the true nature of the Self. Fighting with a dispassionate mind is a way to realize the Self - The Lord also knows that Arjuna does not realize this fact.

With feelings of friendship and pity, Arjuna does not realize that a righteous war is his supreme duty. Being confused between right and wrong, he sought refuge in the Lord. Addressing Arjuna, the Lord begins His exposition on the Science of the Self.
